Diagnose and treat pain in the lower back

A Ganglion Impar (Coccyx) Block may be used to diagnose or treat pain that results from inflammation or damage to the Ganglion Impar, a cluster of nerves located in the lower back, between the coccyx and the sacrum. Using a fluoroscope for precise guidance, a local anesthetic is injected directly into the Ganglion Impar.  Single and sometimes multiple treatments can eliminate or significantly reduce back pain.  Blocking pain for even a short time is helpful for confirming that the source of the pain has been identified.

What to Expect

A Ganglion Impar (Coccyx) Block procedure takes about 15 minutes.  We will administer a local anesthetic to numb the injection site, which may sting momentarily, but other than that the procedure is generally comfortable.

Recovery/Side Effects

People often experience profound and immediate pain relief following a Ganglion Impar (Coccyx) Block treatment.  After the procedure you will be able to go home and, generally, will be able to resume normal activities. Any tenderness around the injection sites can be relieved with ice.  The risks of the procedure are low, and we will discuss any concerns you may have prior to treatment.

You don’t have to live with lower back pain. Get relief and schedule an appointment at our office in Teaneck today.
